Many people become students and enthusiasts of martial arts and the associated fitness training that goes with being a martial artist. There are many reasons behind their interest. Some being the physical fitness and weight loss aspects of training, to gain confidence, discipline and self-control, or the need to learn self-defence.
Due to the rising popularity of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), increasing numbers of people are participating in fitness training based around martial arts, or more specifically Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
It can be hard to distinguish or work out which training facilities provide legitimate martial arts training with so many commercial gyms and training providers adopting and adding the MMA acronym to their programs. Capital Combat is one of the few training facilities in Canberra offering legitimate MMA training, and the only facility on Canberra’s south side. The training techniques and strategies provided by Capital Combat are current, consistent and delivered by professional combative athletes.
Capital Combat offers a variety of programs that will suit your individual needs and fit in with your busy lifestyle. All training is conducted in a safe and positive environment providing you with the tools to succeed.
Capital Combat offers submission fighting/wrestling in the form of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ).
Capital Combat is affiliated with EQUIPE MESTRE WILSON JIU JITSU under the guidance of Professor Minol Tavares Tutida located in Melbourne www.emwjj.com. Capital Combat embraces and enforces the Mission Statement of Equipe Mestre Wilson Jiu-Jitsu Australia, to focus on providing its members with the highest possible standard and the most up to date international level in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Techniques. Whilst on this journey it aims to educate its students to be the best they can be both on and off the mat, ensuring they are the best individual they can be.
BJJ emphasises techniques where submission holds involving joint locks and chokeholds are applied. The advantage of a larger, stronger opponent comes from superior reach and more powerful strikes – these perceived advantages are largely negated when wrestling on the ground. Once an opponent is on the ground, a number of manoeuvres (and counter-manoeuvres) are available to manipulate the opponent into suitable position for the application of a submission hold. This system of movement and manipulation can be likened to a game of chess contested between two experienced players.
BJJ is a martial art form that requires skill and efficiency, not brute strength. This style of combat is built on the principle that a smaller, weaker person can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant using correct leverage and technique understanding.
BJJ encompasses techniques that teach you how to protect yourself and to effectively defend from your back, commonly perceived as a weak position to be in.
Training in BJJ provides realistic, effective self-defence. Statistics show that nearly all street fights and the like end up on the ground within moments. BJJ provides a different kind of fitness, conditioning, weight control, and increased flexibility. BJJ offers a full body workout that most people have never experienced. Watch your strength and endurance levels go through the roof as you transform your body, losing weight and toning your muscles.
Use Martial Arts To Help Your Children Grow and Succeed!
When it comes to martial arts and your kids, there are quite a few different options out there.
Sure, you could go the conventional route and enrol them in Karate, Taekwondo or something similar, but to give your child something that offers practicality from the beginning is a gift for life.
However, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) might just be the best option possible.
Why is this?
Let’s take a look at six important reasons to enrol your child or children with our Martial Arts programs TODAY!
It Helps with Social Interaction
It can be tough to make friends as a kid, but it is crucial that your child not only learn how to interact socially with others, but actually make friends and build his or her social network. While BJJ seems like an individual sport, it’s not. You cannot go it alone here, and children enrolled in a Jiu Jitsu class will build relationships with others on their team. In many instances, we see them go on to become lifelong friends.
It Helps Improve Health
According to the Australian Institute of Health and welfare, 1 in 4 children between the ages of 2 and 17yrs are “Obese” as of Aug 2017. Those numbers have been steadily climbing since 2007 at a rate of around 5% every year since! The numbers are even more startling when you factor in kids who are just overweight, and not obese.
Along with obesity, childhood diseases like diabetes have skyrocketed. It’s all part of our sedentary lifestyle, where kids are more content to spend time in front of the TV or playing a video game than actually doing something physical.
It Builds Self Confidence
OK, so this is probably the most obvious reason to enroll your children in our Brazilian Jiu Jitsu class, but it bears mentioning, simply because so many kids today have low self-confidence. In our BJJ class, your child will learn to be confident in his or her skills and abilities.
This has ramifications that go well beyond the practice mat or the competition floor, and yes there is scientific study to back these facts! It has a direct, measurable impact on many areas of their life, from their ability to deal with bullies in school to the likelihood they’ll succumb to peer pressure about smoking, drinking or drugs.
It’s Never Too Early
Think that your kid should wait to enrol in a Martial Arts course until they’re a little older? That’s probably not true. In fact, most kids can begin learning the art when they’re as young as five or six years old. It grows with them, giving them a potential lifelong hobby, or may even turn into a full-blown passion that will be a huge part of their life forever.
All kids can benefit from developing better focus and discipline at an early age. It will help them during training and practice, of course, but it will also play a role in their education success, and even on the job when they get older.
It Ensures They Can Defend Themselves
Children enrolled in our training learn real life skills and practical self-defence to enable them to defend themselves from a wide range of threats and situations. This is a vital skill for kids today, and will help ensure that they are safe from aggressors, predators and attackers.
Of course, these skills are not turned toward offense, as students are taught from the very beginning that the skills they learn should only be used in a defensive manner.
Capital Combat provides Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) training to all individuals. From those wishing to try it for the experience and the training benefits, to the more competitive person with the benefit of adding the full repertoire of standup to ground skills for competition.
Striking and grappling techniques are the common techniques used in MMA. Striking techniques may involve kicks, knees, elbows and punches while grappling techniques involve the use of holds, sweeps, throws and chokes.
The best MMA fighters are trained in all aspects of fighting and are able to fuse the elements together. However, each will usually specialise in one particular aspect of MMA. Sometimes this style is so dominant that it is overwhelming for their opponent.
Capital Combat provides striking classes inclusive of; Dutch kickboxing, Amatuer boxing, and Muay Thai. Covering all the basics through to some of the most efficient and effective offensive and defensive techniques for developing practical skills.

What is Combat Fitness at Capital Combat!
The first thing you should know is that anyone of any fitness level can participate in our training.
Having a sports performance component is necessary to assist our team in its preparations, whether competing in striking (Boxing, Kickboxing, Muay Thai), Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ), or Mixed Martial Arts (MMA).
The subject of strength training in sports has become a hotly debated topic in recent years. Some coaches believe that you can never have enough, while others believe strength is largely overrated.
For those that train in combat sports, they know that explosive strength, power, speed and conditioning culminating with the ability to continually use it wherever the contest may go, are all necessary traits if you want to be a well-rounded athlete.
Today’s athletes cannot afford to be lacking in any of these areas! That is what is so great about our sessions! No two sessions are ever the same! And we build human machines!
We have a great environment, everyone supports, encourages and gets behind one another to achieve!
What we don’t do is use training methods where we endanger our people (Like some strength and conditioning specific centres!) everyone is correctly shown, everyone is corrected during exercise, everyone is encouraged to do their best!
If you’re injured we take time to modify exercises so you can still train! Or provide rehabilitation options to help get you back to doing what you love doing.
Fortunately, we are very good at what we do! Our team of competitive athletes are trained properly, and they are able to use their fitness as another weapon that can be used to control the contest and take it where they want it to go.
Whether its for a lifestyle change, or to add something to what you already do! Feel free to come along and take advantage of a free introductory session with our team with no obligations! Come see how we do it!
Train Hard! Train Smart! Train Different!
